Sub: International Year Of Millets -2023

Dear Member,

As you may be aware, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at its 75th Session in March 2021 declared the year 2023 as the ‘International Year of Millets’ (IYM 2023). This was adopted by a United Nations Resolution which was supported by over 70 nations, India being one of them.

The UNGA has set the following objectives for International Year of Millets -:

• Awareness of the contribution of millet to food security and nutrition.
• Inspire stakeholders to improve sustainable production and quality of millets.
• Focus on enhanced investment in research and development and extension services to achieve the other two aims.
• Unleashing the potential of millets for the well-being of people and the environment

The IYM 2023 and the focus towards increasing millet production will contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It also provides a unique opportunity to raise awareness on nutritional and health benefits of millet consumption as well as creating sustainable and innovative market opportunities for millets.

With this objective, the Government of India is also organizing various activities and contests such as Mega Food Event 2023, Nutrition through Nutri-cereals (Millets), Millets Magic –share your recipe contest, quiz contests etc. The details are available on https://www.mygov.in/campaigns/millets

The Ministry of Tourism has requested the hospitality establishments to actively participate in promoting IYM 2023. The Ministry has suggested that the hospitality establishments may introduce some millet dishes in their menu along with setting -up of ‘Experience Centres at the hotel /restaurant premises to spread awareness about this initiative. We are enclosing  an e-booklet on millet dishes that the members may consider to add / introduce in their menu.
