Sub: - Important Information on Mentioning of Hotel Room Sizes on Website / Listings etc.
It has been reported by our members that the Legal Metrology Department of a State Government has issued notices and demanding compounding penalties when room size mentioned by Hotels on their website etc is mentioned in ‘Sq. Fts’. However, as per Legal Metrology Act 2009 vide section 5(1)(i) - ‘The base unit of length is ‘Metre’ only.
We sought a legal opinion from our Legal Counsel and based on their advice; we would like to apprise our members with the following important updates on this subject:
- Under the Legal Metrology Act, hotels are not mandated to mention the room size on listings, websites or promotional materials.
- If a hotel chooses to display room sizes, the same must only be mentioned in ‘Square Metres’ (Sq. Mt.) to comply with the Act and avoid penalties.
- Wherever room size is mentioned, the following disclaimer must be clearly displayed: “Room rates are not linked to or determined by room size. The room size is provided solely for guest information.”
We appreciate your attention to this matter and request all members to ensure compliance accordingly.
Thank you for your continued cooperation.
With best regards,
Jaison Chacko
Secretary General
