Greetings from FHRAI!!

This is to inform you that the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026, which will supersede the 2016 rules. These Rules will come into full effect from April 1, 2026. The enclosed note provides information about the Salient Features of these rules. Some highlights of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 are enumerated below:

  1. Mandatory Four-Stream Segregation at Source
  2. Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs)
  3. Polluter Pays & Environmental Compensation
  4. Digital Tracking & Centralised Portal
  5. Use of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) by Industries
  6. Landfill and Legacy Waste Management
  7. Duties of Local Bodies and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs)
  8. Special provisions for Solid waste management in Hilly areas and islands
