Sub: CPCB Revises Pollution Index Classification for Hotels, Resorts, Restaurants and Banquet Halls – A Major Achievement for the Hospitality Industry
Dear Members,
We are pleased to inform you about a significant policy development for the Indian hospitality industry, undertaken by the Central Pollution Control Board by revising the Pollution Index Classification for hotels, resorts, restaurants and banquet halls
This landmark decision is the outcome of sustained advocacy efforts by the FHRAI, spearheaded by our President, Mr. Surendra Kumar Jaiswal, who consistently represented the concerns of the hospitality industry before the concerned authorities. We are pleased to share that the Government has acknowledged the need for a more scientific, practical and differentiated classification framework for our sector.
The revised classification recognises that pollution potential varies based on the size of the establishment and the adoption of environmentally responsible practices. Accordingly, the CPCB has introduced a more rational categorisation under the Pollution Index. The revised pollution index classification is given as under:
Hotels/Motels/Resorts
- Hotels/Motel/ Resort Having Above 300 rooms come under Red category
- Hotels/Motel/ Resort Having Above 300 rooms (based on cleaner /gaseous fuel in Kitchen) comes under Orange Category
- Hotels/Motel/ Resort Having 101 to 300 rooms comes under Orange Category
- Hotels/Motel/ Resort Having 21 to 100 rooms comes under Orange Category
- Hotels/Motel/ Resort Having 21 to 100 rooms (based on cleaner /gaseous fuel in Kitchen) comes under Green Category
- Hotels/Motel/ Resort Having Up to 20 rooms comes under Green Category
- Hotels/Motel/ Resort Having Up to 20 rooms (based on cleaner /gaseous fuel in Kitchen) comes under White Category
Restaurants/Dhabas/Eateries
- Restaurants / Dhaba/ Eateries having more than 200 seat comes under Orange Category
- Restaurants / Dhaba/ Eateries having 101 to 200 seats comes under Green Category
- Restaurants / Dhaba/ Eateries having up to 100 seats comes under White Category
Standalone Banquet/Marriage Hall
- Standalone Banquet/Marriage Hall area more than 2500 sqm comes under Orange Category
- Standalone Banquet/Marriage Hall area more than 1000 sqm and up to 2500 sqm comes under Green Category
- Standalone Banquet/Marriage Hall area up to 1000 sqm. comes under White Category
This revised framework is expected to reduce the regulatory burden on several hospitality establishments while encouraging the adoption of cleaner technologies and sustainable environmental practices.
